Anders Gustaf was born July 21 1902 and was Emma and Karl’s first child. It seems he only used the middle name Gustaf.

Gustaf was the first of Emma’s children to emigrate to America. He sailed with the ship «Drottningholm» from Gothenburg July 21 1923. He left Sweden on his 21th birthday. He arrived in New York August 1 1923. He traveled by the name Anders Gustaf Karlson, and the ship’s manifest lists N.D. Wilton as his final destianation. His uncle Olof had emigrated to Wilton, North Dakota in 1905.

Gustaf var den første av Emmas barn som emigrerte til USA. He reiste med skipet «Drottningholm» fra Gøteborg 21. juli 1923, på sin 21 årsdag. Han reiste som Anders Gustaf Karlson. I skipsmanifestet står N.D Wilton som reisedestinasjon. Hans onkel Olof hadde emigrert til Wilton, North Dakota i 1905.

He is no 14 on the list, and is listed as Anders Gustaf Karlson. His trip is paid for by uncle Olof Hagström and this uncle in Wilton, North Dakota as final destination. He list’s his father Carl Olsson from Sörby, Myra as closest relative.

Gustaf’s life in the US is somewhat a mystery. We belive he went to Wilton, North Dakota, but he did not stay there. In my grandfather Eric‘s obituary in the newspaper «Vestkusten» it is mentioned that when Eric first came to the US in 1928 he stayed with his brother in Chicago.

In the immigration record upon Eric’s arrival there is a handwritten notice that he had a «Ticket to brother Gustav 5745 Emerald Ave (??), Chicago». There is a street in Chicago called South Emerald Ave. Could this be where he lived?

Gustaf sitt liv i USA er et lite mysterium. Vi antar at han reiste til Wilton, North Dakota, men han ble ikke værende der. I min farfar Eric sin nekrolog i den svensk-amerikanske avisen «Vestkusten» står det at Erik reiste til sin bror i Chicago da han først kom til USA i 1928.

I immigrasjonslisten ved Eric’s ankomst til Ellis Island er det skrevet inn en kommentar for hånd; «Billet til bror Gustav 5745 Emerald Ave (??), Chicago». Det er en gate i Chicago som heter South Emerald Ave. Kan det være her han bodde

I received a copy of a family tree made by Ingrid Hagstrom Brenneise. She was the daughter for Olof Hagstrom (Emma’s older brother) and Ida Hagstrom (Oscar sr’s older sister). The family tree was sent to cousin Diana in 1994 so that she could make corrections. In this family tree it is stated that Anders Gustaf was known as Gustav and that he died April 21 1932. He was 29 years old at the time.

Jeg mottok en kopi av et familietre laget av Ingrid Hagstrom Brenneise. Hun var datter av Olof Hagstrom (Emmas eldre bror) og Ida Hagstrom (Oscar sr eldre søster). Familietreet ble sendt til kusin Diana i 1994 for at hun kunne gjøre korrigeringer. I familietreet står det at Anders Gustaf var kjent som Gustav og at han døde 21. april 1932. Han ble 29 år gammel.

The information on the time of his death made it possible to find him in public records. Gus Carlson died in Chicago April 21 1932 and was burried April 26 in Mt Hope Cemetary in Chicago, Illinois.

Informasjonenen om når han døde gjorde det mulig å finne han i offentlige arkiver. Gus Carlson døde i Chicago 21. april 1932 og ble begravet 26. april ved Mt Hope kirkegård i Chicago, Illinois.

His year of birth is wrong (1903 instead of 1902), but the date of birth is correct.

The name of the funeral home is also incorrect. The actual name is Lain-Hursen.

Fødselsåret er oppført feil (1903 istedenfor 1902), men fødselsdatoen er korrekt.

Navnet på begravelsesbyrået er også feil. Det riktige navnet er Lain-Hursen.

Gus’s home address at the time of death was 7442 Champlain Ave. I can only find 7442 South Champlain Ave on Google Maps.

The death certificate is a bit difficult to read, but it does provide some information about what happened to Gus.

Dødsattesten er litt vanskelig å lese, men den gir noe informasjon om hva som skjedde med Gus.

The primary cause of death was tuberculous peritonitis (intestinal tuberculosis). Date of onset: November 1931.

Other contributory causes of importance was tuberculous pleuritis (pleurisy). Date of onset: February 10th 1932.

The doctor who signed the death certificate had tended to Gus from Februar 29 to April 21 1932.

Gus died at 8:19 a.m. on April 20th 1932.

There was performed an autopsy that confirmed diagnosis.

The death certificate also states that Gus had lived in Chicago for 6 years, but had stayed 8 years in the US. We do not know for sure where he lived his first two years.

Dødsattesten tydeliggjør også at Gus hadde bodd i Chicago i 6 år, men hadde bodd totalt 8 år i USA. Vi vet ikke med sikkerhet hvor han bodde sine første to år i USA.

I received the pictures above from cousin Diana in San Francisco, and there is a note attached to them saying «Anna and Gote, Mount Hope, Sweden».

I have searched for Mount Hope in combintation with Sweden and found nothing.

There is however a Mount Hope Cemetary in Chicago, Illinois and as stated in the death record, this is where Gus Carlson was burried.

Jeg mottok bildene over fra kusin Diana i San Francisco, og det står skrevet på en lapp som er festet til bildene at dette er «Anna og Gote, Mount Hope, Sweden».

Jeg har søkt etter Mount Hope i kombinasjon med Sverige, men ikke funnet noe.

Det finnes derimot en Mount Hope kirkegård i Chicago, Illinois og som det fremkommer i kilden for dødsfallet var det her Gus Carlson ble gravlagt.

The picture on the left of Anna and Göte is the one I received from cousin Diana. The picture on the right is a Google Map image of the front gate of Mount Hope Cemetary in Chicago. The building in the back has a very distinctive roof.

It appears that Anna and Göte went to Chicago to visit Gustaf’s grave.
